Orange Les Bleues: reveal the edit before it becomes the claim

Orange and Marcel used synthetic face replacement to make a highlight film first appear to feature France’s men’s team, then reveal the women players whose actions had been composited.

Reported execution: the reveal corrected the first impression

Publicis Groupe says Orange and Marcel launched the work before France’s 2023 international women’s tournament. The film opens like a familiar compilation of men’s football highlights. Its later reveal shows that the athletic actions belonged to the women’s team, while face-replacement and visual-effects work created the initial misdirection.

The AI contribution was not incidental finishing. The altered identities supplied the campaign’s argument about whose skill is granted immediate cultural recognition.

Our reading: the disclosure is the creative hinge

Synthetic alteration is unusually easy to misuse in sport, where likeness, attribution and trust all matter. Here the manipulation is purposeful only because the campaign reveals it and restores the players’ identities. Without that turn, the film would reproduce the invisibility it claims to challenge.

For any comparable execution, make the reveal unmissable, retain clear credit and get the rights process in front of the edit. A clever transformation does not erase the obligations owed to performers.

Evidence boundary: a reveal is not a representation audit

The primary agency announcement establishes the campaign, partners and purpose. It does not prove that the work changed long-term coverage, sponsorship or audience treatment of women’s football.

The transferable lesson is narrow: synthetic media can make a bias visible when the audience is shown the trick and the people hidden by it are named. Distribution should keep the reveal attached to the altered film rather than letting a deceptive cut circulate alone. That procedural choice is part of the campaign’s ethics, not merely a media-detail in practice. It should apply to teaser cuts, social extracts, press stills and broadcaster hand-offs as well, everywhere.
