A script is not a film.

Looking back at Lexus’s AI-written advert: authorship is only useful when it names the actual work.

The record

Lexus’s November 2018 announcement presented Driven by Intuition as an AI-written advert directed by Kevin Macdonald. It is an early marker in this archive because the division of labor was part of the public pitch: a generated script still had to become a directed, produced and finished film.

Our reading, looking back

The headline is attractive because it compresses a complicated process into one author. That compression is also the problem. An advertising idea travels through interpretation, casting, performance, camera choices, editing and sound. Calling the result AI-made without identifying the stage hides the work a production team needs to understand.

A useful archive should resist the temptation to retell every early experiment as a prediction of the present. What matters here is the decision structure. Who chose the inputs? Who accepted the script? Who changed an ambiguous instruction into a shot? Those questions make an old case useful to a current brief without pretending that its system was a present-day video generator.

Take it into the room

Write a production credit that someone could use to reconstruct responsibilities. Name the generated contribution and the human decisions around it. Then ask whether the tool introduced a worthwhile possibility or simply supplied a more newsworthy description of a conventional piece of work. A precise answer is more valuable than a grand claim about the future.

Source facts and editorial interpretation are distinguished in the text. A brand or agency account is not an independent effectiveness audit.
